UPDATE March 27, 2022: In the end, the solution for me was to install Linux Mint MATE. I'm hoping that the Linux Mint community, which seems to be very friendly and knowledgeable, will be able to guide me!

I really hope we can find a solution to make Linux work on this laptop, since it's too old to install Mac OS updates. Not sure if it's related, but it limits my capacity of investigation. Pressing Ctrl +Alt + F7 will return to the desktop environment. Interestingly, when I press Ctrl + Alt + F2 (or other F keys), I also get a black screen instead of a tty. If I try the Nouveau driver, my laptop frequently freezes for 2-10 minutes when I try to watch a video or use an app that is hardware accelerated.
I'm using the nvidia driver, as you can see in this screenshot: I'm looking for a solution that will let me see the screen while the computer is locked, so I can see the password prompt.
At first I though it was frozen and I had to reboot, but I discovered that if I blindly type my password and press Enter, the black screen disappears and I can resume normal use. When I Lock the computer, or when it goes to sleep and Locks, the screen stays entirely black when I wake it up. So far, Mint is impressively easy to setup, nice looking and easy on the CPU and RAM of my old laptop. I installed Linux Mint Xfce on my Macbook Pro 2009 after trying Lubuntu and Zorin OS Lite.
